In 2025, the legendary Stelvio Pass Road turns 200 years old and celebrates an anniversary that is an epoch-making milestone. A long tale started by the Hapsburg vision and the ingenuity of Carlo Donegani, the Stelvio Pass Road, with its breathtaking landscapes and 88 hairpin bends, combines history, sacrifice, culture and sporting passion.
From its inauguration, the Stelvio Pass Road and its 88 hairpin bends, 48 in South Tyrol and 36 in Valtellina, a symbol of Habsburg power and the construction ingenuity of the time, became an indispensable strategic and cultural bridge between southern and central Europe. A complex engineering masterpiece that won the record for the highest carriage road in Europe and became a strategic channel for trade, commerce and tourism. Since 1825, a legendary story that began to be written 10 years earlier, in 1815, with the Congress of Vienna, the key year in which the idea of creating a link between the Alpine passes took shape.
The Congress of Vienna redesigned post-Napoleonic Europe by annexing Alta Valtellina and Lombardo-Veneto to the Austrian Empire. This new political reality made the creation of direct links between Milan and Vienna across the Alps essential. The Stelvio, due to its strategic position, became the key point to connect Valtellina to Tyrol and strengthen Austrian control over the borders. It was precisely in those years, driven by these strategic needs, that the ambitious project of a great engineering work destined to become legend took shape: the Stelvio Pass Road.
Read the study carried out by Sondrio's Carlo Donegani High School.
The construction of the Stelvio Pass Road began in 1820, on the orders of Emperor Franz I of Austria, who entrusted the impressive project to the engineer Carlo Donegani. The aim was to create a direct and permanent connection between Valtellina and Val Venosta that would challenge the 2758 metres of the Stelvio Pass. Thousands of workers worked on steep, rocky slopes under prohibitive conditions to create an engineering masterpiece that required the construction of bridges, tunnels, hairpin bends and solid retaining walls and the adoption of state-of-the-art techniques in harmony with the Alpine morphology.
It took five years of arduous work before the 88 hairpin bends of the Stelvio Pass Road were opened in 1825, a work that immediately became a driving force for trade, commerce and the first tourist flows, as well as a symbol of Habsburg power and the construction ingenuity of the time. An important strategic and cultural link that radically marked the transformation of the Central Alps.
During the First World War, the Stelvio became the scene of the “White War”, fought under extreme conditions between Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops. The pass and the surrounding mountains were fortified, turning into a front line. Here, soldiers fought through glaciers, avalanches and frost, building trenches, barracks and military roads. Even today, along the peaks bordering the Stelvio Pass Road, remains and testimonies of that conflict are still visible, the memory of a war that profoundly marked humanity and territory.
1 June 1953 marked an epic date: the Giro d'Italia challenged the legendary Stelvio Pass for the first time, writing an indelible page in the history of cycling. The Bolzano-Bormio stage saw Fausto Coppi as the absolute protagonist with an attack on the famous climb, first over the pass and conquering the pink jersey and the fifth Giro. That legendary day consecrated the Stelvio Pass Road as an immortal icon and symbol not only for cycling but also for the collective imagination: since then, the “Cima Coppi” has become a mythical appointment for two-wheel enthusiasts.
In 2025, the Stelvio Pass Road is not just history, but a living emotion that attracts adventurers from all over the world to its legendary hairpin bends. Despite facing heavy traffic and climate impacts, this Alpine icon remains a dream on asphalt. The Stelvio Pass Road is a precious heritage, now more than ever to be travelled with passion, to be valued and to be carefully preserved.

Mortirolo, Gavia, Stelvio: the mountain calls
MOGAST is the acronym for Mortirolo, Gavia and Stelvio: three of the most iconic alpine passes in Europe, tackled in a single epic cycling day.
It is not a competition, but a collective adventure: an annual event that combines sport, nature and friendship, in a light and welcoming atmosphere.
From 27 to 29 June 2025, the "village" of MOGAST meets in Casanatura, in Valtellina, for three days of cycling, chatting and sharing.
Saturday is the heart of the event: we start at dawn to climb the giants, choosing between the classic road route and the alternative gravel, rougher and free.
The philosophy is that of travel more than performance: you ride with GPS tracks and road book, in a self-managed way, but never alone.
Friday and Sunday are dedicated to hospitality, relaxation and stories, between those who come for the first time and those who return every year.
You sleep in a tent, eat together and enjoy the mountain air slowly and cheerfully.
All you need is a medical certificate to participate, and a strong desire to be part of something authentic.

As in previous editions, the Cantine Aperte route offers customers the opportunity to enjoy 11 wine tastings, including 5 DOCG, 4 DOC-IGT and 2 Sforzati, and gastronomic tastings: pizzoccheri and gourmet sausages with polenta taragna. Accompanying persons and children will be able to purchase the Soft Ticket, which allows them to enjoy one of the gastronomic tastings and Levissima water.

The 108th Giro d'Italia: San Michele all'Adige - Bormio.
Stage for breakaways and attacks. The main climbs, including the Mortirolo, are quite far from the finish, but the finale is always uphill, although not steep, which could lead to significant gaps.
Expected finish on via Btg. Morbegno at the parking lot in front of the departure of the cable car to Bormio 2000. The prize for the stage winner will be made by the artist Marco Alberti. Sculpture prize “Girino d'Italia” - second edition - Bicentenary of the Stelvio City of Bormio 2025.
Mortirolo, thank you Pantani!
All roads lead to Mortirolo. Exaggerated? Not really, considering that as many as 5 roads lead to the summit. The historic one, from Mazzo in Valtellina, made famous by the Pirate Marco Pantani (the one that reaches even a 20% incline uphill, to be clear). On the Valtellinese side, there is also the route that starts from Grosio, which is slightly less tough than that from Mazzo, and the almost unexplored one from Tovo, along a hidden secondary road that has sections of concrete in the steepest ramps.
You can also reach the pass from Aprica, through Pian Gembro and the Trivigno plateau. Then there's the Brescia side, initially less tough but definitely challenging at the finish.

Over the centuries, the Stelvio Pass has seen not only people and goods pass through, but also ideas, innovations and daring endeavours.
In addition to its strategic and military function, the pass has been the scene of activities that have left their mark on the history of the area. In these screens, realised by the Donegani Research Institute, we invite you to discover some of the historical experiences that have animated the pass, revealing its hidden role as a place of connection, exchange and vision.
From the end of the 18th century, the Stelvio Pass became an important crossing point for the postal service, which connected South Tyrol with other European regions. Couriers on horseback tackled the difficult ascents and descents every day, carrying letters, news and goods between the two sides of the Alps. This service, a symbol of determination and endurance, was crucial in maintaining the link between the territories, consolidating the Pass as a central point of communication.
In the 19th century, the Soresi company from Milan started a commercial experiment on the Stelvio Pass, establishing a line between Milan, Munich, Frankfurt and Nuremberg. Despite a successful speed record on the Milan-Bormio-Landeck route, the initiative only lasted until 1838, due to the higher costs compared to other routes. Small local trade continued, transporting wine and chestnuts to the north and cheese and cattle to the south.

Historic buildings along the Stelvio Pass Road.
Along the imposing route of the Stelvio Pass Road, amidst spectacular hairpin bends and high-altitude scenery, there are numerous historic buildings that testify to its strategic, logistical and symbolic function. Built in different eras, these buildings attest to the importance of the pass not only as a road link, but also as a military garrison, transit point and place of service.
Among the most emblematic structures are the cantoniere houses, built to house the guardians and maintenance men of the road, committed to ensuring the safety and good condition of the route. These houses, which still mark the route today, were essential for controlling the passage and managing the logistical challenges involved in maintaining one of the highest and most impervious roads in Europe. Each building tells a part of the history of the Stelvio Pass Road, from its origins to the present day.
Located along the Lombardy side of the Stelvio Road, the IV Cantoniera is one of the most emblematic of the roadside houses built along the route. Historically, its main function was to house the personnel responsible for the maintenance and surveillance of the road, especially in the sections most exposed to the weather and environmental hazards.
For a short period during the 19th century, the structure was also used as an inn, offering refreshment to travellers and transporters facing the long and demanding ascent to the pass. This dual use testifies its strategic and logistical importance, making it one of the symbols of daily life along the great Alpine road.
Built in 1830 on the Piano del Braulio, near the third cantonment road, the oratory is dedicated to Saint Ranieri. It owes its name and its precious relic, kept in an elegant silver reliquary, to a gift from Viceroy Ranieri of Austria in 1833. A small sacred building, a symbol of devotion along the great Alpine road.

Bormio, in the heart of the Alps, boasts an urban history dating back to the Middle Ages, with a compact and defensive village.
The surrounding area, between the Vallone di Piatta Martina Inferiore and the hairpin bends of Spondalunga, has undergone engineering interventions since the 19th century to ensure road safety. Historical elements such as the Casino, the Cippo and the Obelisk at the Giogo di Stelvio tell the memory of a past linked to the road system and the Alpine border.
Bormio, with its strategic location in the heart of the Alps, has a fascinating urban history rooted in the Middle Ages. The medieval town, characterised by narrow streets and huddled houses, developed around a central core, protected by access gates and dominated by significant buildings such as the parish church. Its compact structure and the settlement choices, designed to respond to defensive and commercial needs, reflect an evolution that has seen significant transformations over the centuries, also visible in the comparison with later reliefs and representations.
The Vallone di Piatta Martina Inferiore is an area that has required significant engineering interventions since the first surveys in the 19th century to ensure the safety of the road. Historical documents and cartographic representations testify the challenges faced in stabilising this stretch and maintaining a safe road over time.
The “tourniquets” at Spondalunga are characteristic hairpin bends of this mountain road section. Their original function, the modifications made over time and the difficulties involved in maintaining them in a challenging alpine environment are documented through historical evidence and vintage pictures.
The Giogo di Stelvio is home to distinctive elements such as the Casino, the Cippo and the Obelisco, which have a historical connection to the road, the border and significant events. Historical documents and graphic representations tell the story of these artefacts, which represent the memory of a past linked to one of the most iconic Alpine passes.

The construction of the Stelvio Pass Road is one of the greatest achievements of 19th century engineering, created to connect Lombardy and Tyrol.
The project, conceived by visionary engineer Carlo Donegani, faced complex technical, political and environmental challenges. The route, which crosses both sides of the pass, required advanced engineering solutions to overcome height differences and natural barriers. The work, still admired today for its audacity and harmony with the Alpine landscape, is an example of ingenuity and determination.
Carlo Donegani (1775-1845) was the engineer responsible for the design of the Stelvio Pass Road, one of the most daring road works of the 19th century. A leading figure in the history of road engineering, he was commissioned by the Austrian government to build the link between Lombardy and Tyrol. His vision, combined with technical expertise and extraordinary organisational skills, made possible the construction of a road that still amazes today for its ingenuity, elegance and integration into the Alpine landscape.
In the early 19th century, the Lombardy side of the Stelvio was the centre of technical and territorial evaluations, including the hypothesis of an exchange between Livigno and Santa Maria, later abandoned. The project then passed to engineer Carlo Donegani, who perfected the original route, addressing the challenges of the area with innovative solutions, such as tunnels and avalanche protection. The executive project of 1819 included detailed plans, profiles and sections, which were essential for an efficient military road at high altitude.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the Vinschgau road was planned to connect South Tyrol with Trentino, overcoming the difficult Salorno lock. The project faced orographic challenges in the section towards Trafoi and in the Trafoi Valley, improving the existing connections. At the same time, the section towards Malles was built to promote local development. The construction of this important infrastructure required technical commitment and cooperation, overcoming natural barriers. This work turned out to be fundamental for the connection and growth of the Atesina region.
